Can Prunera is a remarkable example of early 20th-century modernist architecture, heavily influenced by Catalan and French Art Nouveau styles. This beautifully preserved building, now a museum, offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into both architectural history and contemporary art.
Inside, Can Prunera houses an impressive collection, including works by the renowned local artist Juli Ramis, alongside a rotating selection of exhibitions by various artists. The museum tour begins on the ground and main floors, where visitors can admire the original period furniture—ornate tables, chairs, beds, and cabinets—that reflect the decorative opulence of the era. These rooms also serve as exhibition spaces for paintings and sculptures.
On the upper floor, the exhibition From Art Nouveau to the 21st Century showcases pieces from the Serra Art Collection, a growing assemblage that has been enriched over the years by generous donations from private collectors and artists, all managed by the Tren de l’Art Foundation.
The basement, once a series of traditional storage spaces known as botigues, retains elements of the original household, including an old stove, an olive oil tank, a well, and a former staff dining area—now repurposed as a gallery for temporary exhibitions. A dedicated section also features works by Juli Ramis, illustrating his artistic evolution from early explorations to Cubism and abstract compositions.
Outside, the museum’s garden provides a serene setting where visitors can admire the rear façade of the building and a curated collection of sculptures. Can Prunera officially opened its doors on August 24, 2009, coinciding with the festival of Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of Sóller. Since then, it has become a must-visit cultural site, attracting both tourists and locals eager to connect with the island’s artistic and architectural heritage. The meticulous restoration of the building between 2006 and 2009 has earned Can Prunera widespread recognition, cementing its status as a key landmark of Mallorca’s Art Nouveau movement.
