This small coastal enclave is in a fairly isolated location, and throughout history, this remote location has played a key role in its development.
Separated from the rest of Mallorca by the majestic Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, past generations relied heavily on boats to facilitate the exchange of goods. It is therefore not surprising that Port de Sóller has such a deep connection with shipping and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as such a close relationship with France, which was the main destination for the town’s orange exports. In fact, you can notice the influence of French architecture in its streets and in the way the people speak. There is also a French association of the vall de Sóller.
The historic railway that connects the capital, Palma, with Sóller was inaugurated in 1912. Almost ninety years later, the construction of a tunnel was completed to allow vehicular traffic. Before the completion of the tunnel, drivers had to negotiate the challenging Coll de Sóller, a road with hairpin bends that presented challenges for cyclists and motorists alike. Since 2018, the tunnel has been free to use.
If previous generations had witnessed the modernisation and construction of the Sóller tunnel, they would be surprised by the amount of road traffic that reaches this area today. The early construction of the tunnel would have significantly altered Sóller’s rich maritime history, affecting its role as a centre for importing and exporting produce, especially citrus fruits, and altering its history of fighting pirate invasion.
In 1561, the coasts of Sóller were the target of landings by fleets of Turkish and Algerian pirates. With only wooden swords and rudimentary catapults, the local residents, together with the mountain bandits with their shotguns, defeated the pirates and won a prominent place in the history of Mallorca. Annually, this victory is commemorated in the traditional festival of Es Firó, which remembers the bravery of those who fought against the invading forces and a mock battle is staged with participants on both sides dressed in period costume.
